Bushcat – Brown
R2,349.00
- Size Guide
Bushcat
The Bushcat boot is our Razorback’s shorter twin brother, the spec and materials of the boots are identical with the only difference being a lower cut around the ankle.
This lower cut is favoured by those spending a lot of time on their haunches and needing that extra bit of flexibility around the ankle.
Its double layer of leather upper combines with a pure rubber sole to give you superior stability, comfort and grip while its never-say-die attitude will keep you going.
- This boot supports a lower cut around the ankle than the rest of the range.
- Manufactured with a double layer of leather (2.2mm full grain leather, lined with 1.6mm calf leather).
- Double layer of leather aids in the boots’ water-resistant properties (not waterproof).
- Ankle padding for excellent support, comfort, and protection.
- Thermoplastic toe puff and a heel stiffener for extra support.
- A steel shank between the insole board and sole offers extra support and stability.
- Insole board is secured to the upper with a double stitched 2.2mm braided nylon cord.
- Sole is made from genuine rubber.
- Can be resoled.
- With the durability and lower cut around the ankle, the Bushcat is perfect for those on their haunches most of the day or for those not requiring the additional ankle support of the Razorback.
- JG last – This last has a 3E wide fit and offers a snugger feel all around with a flatter toe box.
- Sole: JG (This sole is our lug option and is designed for grip. It is genuine rubber and has a firm feel to provide stability underfoot).
- Laces: 120 cm.
- Weight: 1.2 kg (Size 8).

Bought these a few weeks back. Very well made shoe, thick leather, strong sole…but be warned, they are quite roomy on the toes and this has created some heel lift.
The shoes are also quite heavy but very solid. I dount these will fall apart anytime soon.
I now have heel inserts with a better inner and thicker socks…Much better.
Done a few short rocky hikes under 10km and the shoes are holding up with no issues. I also spent a bit of time conditioning up the leather to make it more supple and this has helped considerably.
I chose this shorter boot as its just right to cover up your ankle bone without too much height. They look great and are perfect for round the house and out and about in town as well as on the trail. Certainly well worth the cost.

A big shout out to Gareth for lending me his ears and for the speedy delivery of the ‘new look’ pair of Bushcat boots .
My brief to Gareth was simple i.e. i would prefer an alternative leather as the dark brown leather that JG have been using on their boots was well past their sell by date.
I also requested a more comfortable and forgiving hiking friendlier sole and opted for the OR wedge sole, which would be used mainly for light pack, day hiking on maintained trails.
What I got is what I consider as the best bang for your hard earned buck in the JG range i.e. the Bushcat dressed in crazy horse leather and Houston brown colour.
It is clear that the Bushcat will never be the lightest hiking boot available and that it’s reliability and strength lies in its construction and weight.
Kudos to JG on yet another bespoke boot that will continue to stand the test of time and in my view escalate the brand to the Premier league.

A big shout out to Gareth for lending me his ears and for delivering the new look Bushcat ahead of schedule.
My brief to Gareth was simple i.e. I did not want the tired looking dark brown colour and the boots would have to be fitted a with a more hiking friendly sole which would be mainly used for light pack, day hiking on mostly maintained trails.
What I got was the awesome looking crazy horse leather in the Houston Brown with the wedge sole option.
Fair to say that I could not be happier with my purchase.
As much as the new look Bushcat will never be the lightest hiking boot in its class, its reliability and durability does lie in its construction and weight.
In my humble opinion, the Bushcat remains the best bang for your hard earned buck in the JG range.
Can’t wait to give them a lengthy spin soon.
Kudos to JIM GREEN!

Chris –
There’s nothing as tough as these things. Bought a pair almost 20 years ago (cost me R400.. or was it R600.. back then) for use on the farm. They regularly got soaking wet from early morning dew in the veld and from irrigation, spilled diesel on them many times and oh, you know, just got generally mistreated from being my daily footwear on the farm for the first five years of their life.
After I left the farm they became my hiking shoes, garden shoes and fulfilled many other roles.
Here’s the thing.. I still have them – now almost 20 years later – , I still use them regularly and they’re still going strong! Oh, the soles eventually came off about 3 week ago but I had them glued and stitched back on and Voila!
20 Years.. beat that!
I’m elated to have found the company still exists and have a website.. and that these boots are still made. Well done Jim Green!!
